The book we’re reading

A revision-focused literature session that blends set-poem comparison with exam technique. Students read and compare Rudyard Kipling's "If—," a poem of steady, stoic advice on how to meet life's trials, with Dylan Thomas's "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," a passionate villanelle urging the dying to resist death rather than accept it — two very different takes on courage, endurance and how to face what life brings. The class then builds practical revision skills: how and why to make effective cue cards for poems, followed by a strategy for tackling unseen poetry and a chance to apply it to Grace Nichols's "Island Man."
