The book we’re reading

Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" (1884) tells of Mathilde Loisel, a discontented woman who borrows a diamond necklace to shine at a grand party — then loses it, setting off ten years of hardship to repay the debt, and a final twist that reframes everything. A classic of the short-story form, it's part of the IGCSE English Language A anthology and rewards close reading of character, irony and structure.
