What we’re studying
The second part of the travel-writing comparison, moving from reading into technique and practice. Building on the earlier session, students look again at Stanley Stewart's "In the Empire of Genghis Khan" and George Alagiah's "A Passage to Africa," this time focusing on how to structure a comparison — weaving between the two texts to compare purpose, language and the writer's relationship to the place and people they describe, rather than analysing each in isolation. A peer critique on a writing activity puts the skill to work, giving students feedback on their own comparative responses and a clearer sense of what lifts a comparison into the top bands.
