What we’re studying
A writing skills class on crafting a powerful speech, built around one of history's most famous examples. Students learn what a "perfect" speech does — establishing a clear objective and using rhetoric, rhythm and repetition to carry an audience toward it — then study Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" as a masterclass in technique, examining how devices like anaphora, imagery, and a rising, cumulative structure make its message land with such force. The focus throughout is practical: identifying the objectives behind a speech and the specific choices a writer makes to achieve them, so students can apply the same craft to their own exam writing.
